The History

This piece is a reimagining of the history told in Dona Ivone Lara’s song, Lamento do Negro, which recounts the journey from Angola to Brazil and the broken promise of riches that ended in slavery. By depicting a free man with a bag of money, this painting rewrites the end of that story—granting him the wealth and freedom he was originally promised.
